Interior Design Skills

Now, what’s this mysterious ‘eye for interior design’ I keep yammering about? There are certain interior design skills that designers either naturally have, and/or learn in design school. Let’s break it down:

1. Visualizing Spaces: Having an eye for interior design is not just about knowing colors or furniture; it’s about feeling spaces and understanding aesthetics. Seeing an empty space and, in your mind, filling it up with artsy bits and chic furniture. This skills really involves being able to visualize how spaces would look after their design, and how they’d be used.

2. Color Sense: Picking shades that don’t just match but harmoniously dance together. Color sense is one of the most common skills among those with an eye for interior design. This skill is about understanding how colors work and pair together, and visualizing how they would look together in a space.

3. Spatial Awareness: Knowing where each piece fits, like you’re playing a super fun board game like monopoly. But it’s also about understanding how much space stuff takes, like furniture, installations, our movements, etc.

4. Trend Insight: You don’t just follow the trends; you predict ’em. Is pineapple yellow the next big thing? You probably already knew that. Trends can be in anything – furniture, bathroom fixtures, colors, textures, even fabrics.

5. Functional Creativity: Ensuring every piece isn’t just pretty, but super practical. Because style and substance? Yes, please. Designing a space is more than just looks – people are going to be using it, so it needs to work for a purpose. Basically, design is a problem-solving exercise.

All of these skills involve an eye-for detail, as designing is not just about thinking and dreaming, but also execution. So, it involves negotiating, drawing, co-ordination and so much more.
